At age thirty-four, I received a life-changing diagnosis: I had a progressive muscular dystrophy and would eventually need a wheelchair. My walking days were going to end much sooner than I’d expected.
(Spoiler: I received my first wheelchair at the age of 40.)
My high school sweetheart found me again after a 35 year absence, and we were married in 2024. We decided to start our new life together in the center of Arizona's wine tourism.
We are avid travelers and museum-goers. To promote my book and photography, we took a 22-day road trip in the summer of 2023 and at the end of the year went to Madrid, Barcelona and Paris. In 2024, we went to Budapest and Vienna.
My power wheelchair affects how I move through and view the world. While it is not my identity, it does (conveniently) provide a steady surface from which to photograph the world as I move through it.
I look forward to continuing my work as a Barrier-Free Business Consultant, ADA architectural barriers specialist, educator, author, public speaker, disability advocate, and award-winning international photographer from our new location. The rest of my time is spent working on my next book, planning the next trip, catching up on great movies, and enjoying a beverage and the view of Sedona from our back porch.
My disability and my 15+ years as a power wheelchair user are a good start for supporting my creditability, and I have been continually investing in my education.
